Cat people have a special ability to clowder. It's pretty incredible how fast we find each other online. Put one cat in a post and suddenly the comments fill up with people saying "mine does that too," like we've all been summoned by a tiny furry Bat-Signal

And it makes sense. Cat parenting is an arrangement between you and a baby that gives affection limited-time offers. A cub who can sit on your chest for four hours, then recoil from your hand like you just invaded at Genghis Khan levels. So it's only normal we need somebody else to confirm this is normal. Somebody to tell us that yes, their cat also screams at closed doors, demands it be opened, then walks away without entering the room. This is why we gather.

But It's nonetheless incredible. Somebody mentions their cat did something strange and 500 people show up to say theirs does it too, only in tabby.

If anyone needs proof of just how seriously we take this solidarity, you can remind them there’s a Netflix docuseries about exactly how much people should not fluff with cats.
Not “be kind to cats.” Not “cats are nice.” A whole, very serious series built around the fact that cat people online saw someone mess with a cat and immediately and collectively turned into an intelligence agency run by people in cat-covered pajama pants. That’s community.

That’s what I like about this corner of the internet. People see a cat and immediately understand the assignment. Nobody needs to know a guy or a formal introduction. You own a cat? Great. You’re in. No icebreakers, no small talk, nothing but a shared recognition of how adorable they are, and how many shared experiences we have with people we don’t know based on the fact that a feline runs our household.
